We were saddened to learn the news that Thomas Bailliere (’53-’54) died in Baltimore this January at the age of 77. His spirit lives on at Deerwood through grandson, Nicholas Dean (’13-’15). The Clavel Family (Alex was a camper and JC in the 80s and his sons, Charles and James, are current campers) is planning a move to California this year after many years living in Tokyo. When scouting and researching the move, they ran into Ben Ramsey (’14-’15) and his family in Palo Alto. Small world! There may be four Deerwood alumni playing in the same college lacrosse game this spring, when the Bates team visits Middlebury on April 9th. Playing for Bates are Mike Concordia (’08-’15), Parker Strong (’09-’14) and Carlyle Turner (’07-’10), and for Middlebury, Henry Riehl (’06-’15) will try to make the most of his home field advantage. As you may imagine, recent counselor lacrosse games at Deerwood have been star-studded! In July, Otto Foerster (’91-’06) became the proud father of Amelia Isabella. Ed Griffiths (’97-’06) visited Barcelona this fall and went mountain biking with Lluis Ramon Bausa (’13-’15) and Jesus Unzue Elorza (‘13). Phil Harrison (’77-’81) reports that his son, Charlie (’03-’09) is a sophomore at Williams College, and daughters Gray and Caroline are in 11th and 5th grades, respectively. Charlie is looking forward to being back at Deerwood on staff this summer. Richie Howe (’93-’06) has started an email newsletter that helps people save money on their cable, internet and cell phone bills. Talk to Richie if you are overpaying! Oliver Johnson (‘15) ran into waterfront director, Jeff Barclay (’71-’15), this December at the Dorset Playhouse in Vermont. Ollie’s injured foot kept him from skiing that weekend and he ended up at the play (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever) where Jeff’s daughter, Livia, had the starring role. Jules (’14-‘15) and Maxence Laraison (’11-’15) traveled to Chile in December, and did some hiking in the national parks there. Maxence was happy to have his Deerwood fleece keeping him warm! Daniel McGill (’11) just got back from nine months in Costa Rica, where he was working on a behavioral endocrinology study of wild, white-faced Capuchin monkeys. He may be competing in a half Iron-Man triathlon this April with Forrest Carroll (‘01-’11). Angus McLean (’07-’14) will be graduating from Wesleyan University this spring, and is pursuing positions in outdoor education and field biology. Angus credits his Deerwood experience as a big factor in developing his talents and interest in these areas. Liam Paterson (’10-’12) just bought his first house in Sheffield, England, and reports “I’m working in Manchester as a Learning and Development Executive for a recruitment company. Essentially I train all new employees. Still playing lots of football and my team Altrincham Hale won the league and cup double last year!” Liam is excited that his younger brother, George, will be joining the Deerwood staff this summer. Tom Rollins (’89-’97) is living in Winchester, MA with his family, and recently shared a photo of many of the CITs from 1993…“probably the best summer of my life,” said Tom. A new sport for Philip Rynning-Nielsen (’13-’15) is biathlon, and his father tells us that the rifle training at Deerwood has been a big help. Dave Schowalter (’79-’84) traversed the Franconia Ridge late last winter. Ed Strapp (’85-’95) is a flight paramedic for the Maryland State Police, and reports that Scott Doty (’91-‘95), Graham Shafer (’84-‘92), Vinny White (’84-‘97) and Ben Wilson (’91-‘96) have visited to attempt to replicate Clarence’s steak on their fire-pit! Laura and Bruce Thomas (’92-’07) are now proud parents of Elizabeth “Betty” Eads Thomas, born on New Year’s Day! We regret to inform Antler readers that Randolph Wootton, Jr. (’52-’58) passed away unexpectedly in January. We send our condolences to the family, especially to his son, Randy, who was also a camper.
GREENBRIER AND HILTON GET-TOGETHERS…
Some of our senior campers reunited on New Year’s weekend to ski at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire. Pictured below left (and right) are Noah and Ben Robb, Nate Kelsey, Ben Thomsen and Callen Strong. Below center are Jack Thomsen and John O’Brien, who were in Hilton together last summer and noticed each other across the field when John’s Loomis Chaffee team traveled to Andover for an early season soccer game. Jack also faced off against George Willis (’09-’12) at a hockey game this winter at Saint Paul’s School. George scored the winning goal for SPS in a come from behind victory!
